Our brief was to build an ultra-modern dream home, covering 900m2 by the sea in East Preston. As well as key challenges surrounding the property’s size and coastal environment, we also had to adhere to the stipulations of the Private Management Committee, who had their own restrictions on working hours, deliveries and noise levels.
To minimise disruption to the neighbours, we demolished the existing building and crushed the rubble on site rather than take it away. This saved over 40 lorry loads of waste leaving the site. We then used this to build a platform through which we piled the foundations. As a result, the ground floor rooms all have elevated sea views and the traffic was kept to a minimum.
The use of render, slate and glass has created a home that has real architectural presence. Special consideration has been applied to the design and construction to provide large open spans that capitalise on the panoramic sea views. The use of concrete and steel work have allowed for glass doors that are 12 meters wide and yet stand up to the harsh coastal environment. The concept drawings produced by Haydn Jones from Saville Jones Architects, have since been nominated for a design award.
