Our brief was to convert a hairdressers into an independent coffee shop. The conversion required a full restoration and structural overhaul on key parts of the building. We worked to a fixed price contract which was agreed by an independent surveyor.
The nature of the property raised a series of challenges during the build – no more so than the issue of space, or lack of it. All deliveries had to be made before 9:00 am, waste had to be taken away on a daily basis and all work had to be carried out internally. We even had to hand cut every floor joist and walk them from one of our other construction projects to the shop! All work had to be inspected by Chichester’s Conservation Department to ensure it was in keeping with the building’s past.
On opening, patrons of the coffee shop were met with exposed brick walls, high beamed ceilings and polished concrete floors. The project was finished with some high-end detailing including copper Pantone lights, Corian worktops and vintage American tiles. Many features were bespoke, including the ceiling, stairs, kitchen and bar. With the help of French Loft’s Rowland Leach, we transformed this previously unloved building into something beautiful.

Its hard to sum up King and Drury, as interior designers we have used many design builders but none have ever come close to these guys, their focus on quality linked in with a fabulous creative eye and total reliability makes me want to use them for all our projects.
